NH State Park Progress or a loss to the locals

Progress comes at a cost New Hampshire State Park – Flume Gorge.

 flume gorge nh state park

Lincoln New Hampshire has one of the most unique attractions with in the State park system. The Flume Gorge was discovered nearly 100 years ago in a remote section of what is now the Franconia Notch State park area. It features shear Granite walls that rise over 80 feet, and was formed by the stream that runs through it to this day. The State of New Hampshire has capitalized on this incredible natural phenomenon by setting up an intricate board walk through the Gorge. They have for many years manned the park, collected an entrance fee the have provided a shuttle service, food service and modern conveniences during the warm weather months.

The locals have always know that while the visitor center was closed access to the park via snowshoes, micro-spikes and serious climbing gear could easily be enjoyed… while the tour busses were idol.

 flume in winter

My favorite time to visit to Flume Gorge has always been after the walk ways came down. The massive amount of ice that hung off the granite walls necessitated taking down the man-made board walk prior to the winter, to avoid it being destroyed by growing or falling ice with in the gorge.

flume ice climbers

I have walked into the Flume, crossed the covered bridge over the Pemigewasset River and hiked up to Avalanche falls for many years. The site of ice climbers testing their skill and resolve have always been an added benefit to breaking a fresh snow path and getting out in to the woods in the winter.

While talking to a state park employee, I was told they are adding a section to the main park building that will allow them to heat and maintain winter bathrooms and service facilities. As a Lincoln NH Realtor and a past President of the local chamber of commerce I see the value in creating this experience for folks that wouldn’t have ventured into the Flume during the winter months. But – on the other hand the solitude lost saddens me. I knew if I encountered someone in the park when the temps were 10 below they were hardy soles with a good sense of the outdoors. They were dressed for and had the proper gear to be in the woods in the winter.

Lincoln New Hampshire is already home to Loon Mountain ski resort, and the Ice Castles attractions with staff to allow the general public to enjoy a new winter experience. Lincoln is also home to the Kancamagus Scenic highway as part of the White Mountain National Park system. There are a huge number of monitored parking locations to enjoy, that are overseen by the well equip Forest service Ranger Stations along that route.

In the summer Lincoln has a wide variety of paid attractions like the Whales Tale water-park, Clark's Trained Bear shows, Lost river Caves, Zip line tours and more.

In the end I don’t think opening the flume in the winter is the progress I would have chosen. #loonmtrealtor 33 years of real estate experience in the Loon Mountain area of New Hampshire offering solutions not excuses!!
