It is nice to have it stay light a little longer at the end of the day. I took a walk down by the river last night to see what last weeks flood water did to the huge slabs of ice in the Pemigewasset River.
These are some of nature’s ice sculptures, when the force of the rushing water encounters tons of ice it shoved up on the high-ground. As I stood in the nearly dry riverbed the Blocks of ice towered over me 12 to 20 feet high, many were the size of a small car.
I wish I could have found something to put in front of these flows to give the pictures a size and scale. These chunks are truly impressive, but it is difficult to tell just how big they are.
The River came up about 10 feet in a twelve hour period and remained high driving the loose ice up on shore for three days in a row. Then in a matter of a couple of days dropped again to leave this empty path where the water had flowed.
I hope you enjoy nature’s ice sculptures; these can be pretty dangerous to climb on they are very unstable and over the next few days with the warmth and the sun many will allow gravity to take its course. I sure didn’t want to get pinned by a slab letting go unexpectedly. From here forward I’ll watch from a bit more of a distance.

What a great place to live Steve. Mother nature is a bit of an artist. I think we should all take the time out of our day to see what surrounds us and appreciate nature while we still have it.
Wow. This is so cool.
Big bodies of water can do the most amazing things.
Steve, that's right! You don't want to be like the guy that fell into the volcano a few weeks back...trying to secure a good photo!
Jane...these slabs are a bit scary to stand near..
How long before that all thaws? Nature is truely amazing, I love the ice in the tree!
Steve, the power of water and ice together is awesome. One needs to stay out of the way!
Steve, great pics, be careful, with the sun out and not a cloud in the sky, temps in the 50's our snow is melting, there is still snow, but it is melting
Steve, great photos! It is amazing the force generated to create those ice sculptures!
Steve, those are great shots. You can't beat Mother Nature for beauty and creativity.
Steve - Those are really neat looking pictures! I can't remember a year when we have seen so much snow and ice across the nation! The power to create those ice sculptures is amazing!
Steve - those are beautiful shots and to think that in just a few weeks they'll probably all be melted.
I love these pictures, Steve! Mother Nature is a very powerful force and leaves tremendous beauty in her path. (Unless of course you piss her off then it's a whole other story! ;) )
Mother Nature at work staging the great outdoors! She was just doing what all us women love to do...move things around and create a new look every once in awhile.
Sharon, I didn't think about it that way...Staging the outdoors.
Steve.. It is amazing.. not only the height of the ice, but how high the water levels must have been to push them up that high. I can see why you did NOT feel comfortable standing too near them.
Steve - These photos are a great depiction of natures amazing power. Ice can can have enough force to bend metal as if it were play-dough. Smart man to appreciate nature from a safe distance. Nice photos.
Judy, When the river was piling these slabs up you could here the grinding noises from a good distance...and that is most definitely the reason not to be caught under one when they let go.
Thanks for sharing these photos. That is interesting that you could hear them grinding against each other. The power of mother nature!
