The Kancamagus…It’s much harder to say than it is to drive, with the exception of the winter (then it’s an even match). This 26.5 mile road that runs East to West – Conway to Lincoln there are no commercial buildings along the entire route, if you start on either end your tank had better not be near empty. The first point of interest along the route is the Lincoln-Woods ranger station. It is noted for the cable bridge that spans the Pemigewasset river (another tongue twister), and was built along an old railroad bed used long ago in the timber and paper mills. The trail head at Lincoln woods allows hikes to access the famous Appalachian mountain trail. It also is an easy hike to swimming and camping sites (and requires a White Mountain national park sticker).
The Kanc –as the locals call it offers fabulous vistas and viewing areas along the route, just pull off at one of the many safe parking spots (carved out for the view) and enjoy. No hiking required for the novice, I sometimes just roll down the window take a great shot and go on to the next look out point.
National Scenic Byway…is not something I made up to get you to visit, this is the designation given by the United States Department of Transportation. The Kanc wasn’t always a route from point “A-to-B” it wasn’t until 1959 that the two dead-end roads were connected to form the “Kanc”. The Highest pass on the route is at the 2,855 foot elevation mark (Kancamagus pass). This bit of information will make sense to you when you hear the Indian word means “The Fearless One”, when ever I make the trip over the Kanc I watch for my passengers to white knuckle the edge of the roads sheer drops and hair-pin corners.
Pronounced: “Kank-ah-maw-gus” it’s no wonder people get the spelling wrong and butcher the pronunciation…and why we call it the “Kanc”. My real estate office is on Route 112 –the Kanc, and I’m happy to drive this little stretch of paradise found everyday. Sometimes I drive a few miles up the Kanc to sit at a picnic table and have lunch or before work to finish my coffee. Not a bad
place to be and I wouldn't have it any other way.
If you are looking for a property on the Lincoln/Loon mt side of the kanc give me a call…If I’m not out to lunch (figuratively) I’m the area expert.

Great post Steve! My drive into the office is along the floor of the Sonoma Valley...and I'm prone to stopping along the way to enjoy a last sip of java, too. Aren't we fortunate to live in such beautiful places? Must say, though...you have greater opportunities to get waaaaay out "in the wild."
Kirsten...I had a women call who was quite pissed off, that I was soliciting city folks to drive through our beautiful mountains just for the view. She was upset that too many people would take my advice and visit, I laughed and said you give me way too much credit.
one of my favorite spots on the Kanc
Steve I was going to say that you did an outstanding job on this blog but your wife probably did it after the great tips that she picked up at RainCamp :) :) :)
I'm one of the butchers...for some reason I've always pronounced it "kane ga mang us" so I better just use Kanc now like the locals!
George, Although my wife is a great writer I will take credit for this...she's too busy working at Terra Mesa Resorts at Loon Mt to help me with my stuff.
I can testify. This is one of the most beautiful drives in America. Awesome pictures. Can't wait to see it again.
What a great time to visit....the FALL...beautiful scenic drive...leaves all the different colors...just magnificent!
Literally, those are some gorgeous photos. Literally, you are the expert. And, I highly doubt that you are 'figuratively' out to lunch.
Melissa, I certainly try not to give that impression...I am the area expert, but I have a teen who knows it all.
Steve, Your photos make the area look so inviting. It's really a treat to be able to see them in both winter and summer. Anyone coming to the Lincoln area would be crazy not to call you.
Elyse, When you are ready to get out of that summer heat...try a trip to the great white north, Steve.
