For us this was a two-fer, we had planned on dinner at Govoni's restaurant in Woodstock New Hampshire anyway, but we also love the Waterfall directly behind the venue as well. It really makes waiting to be seated enjoyable, and of course many people not there for dinner were there to explore lost river.

If you haven't been to the lost river caves that is a great place to spend a hot august day. they are mostly shaded and cool in more ways than one.
The Story of Lost River Caves: The first documented exploration of Lost River took place in 1852. Similar to Alice’s tumble down the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland, local historian Elmer E. Woodbury related in his writings how the Jackman brothers, Royal and Lyman were busily fishing along the stream, working their way over and around the boulders when suddenly Lyman disappeared out of site as if the earth had swallowed him up. He had slipped into a moss covered hole and fallen into a cave about 15 feet below into a pool of water about waist deep. Now known as Shadow Cave, it was the first of the many caves the boys would soon discover. Lost River Link
Lost river Road is the other end of the Kancamagus which is also called rte 112...from North Conway to Lincoln is the Kanc...From Lincoln to the Vermont boarder it's called Lost River Rd.
Here are a couple of shots I took From Govoni's Restaruant...Hurry and visit for dinner they close after Labor Day but Lost river Caves stay open well into the fall.

Not a bad back yard if I do say so myself! I couldn't imagine not waking up to that view every morning. It really is a special place.
Allyson...We are spoiled, everywhere we go there are some terrific views and beautiful things to see.
Magnificent.
The Latest thing being offered at Lost river Caves are Night-time lantern tours, I'm going to have to give that a try. (check their site for info www.findlostriver.com)
Those that choose not to explore are missing most of the enjoyment.
Was up there about a week ago and it's such beautiful country this time of year...but missed the lost river caves...next time. have a good weekend
Wow - that's a pretty scary story about Lyman falling 15 feet into the "earth" - would have completely freaked me out! Your pictures are absolutely beautiful and it definitely looks like a place I would love to explore.
Love the pictures from the restaurant...don't drink too much wine with dinner or you'll end up like poor Lyman.
Very cool Steve, looks like a great place to spend some time exploring,,,thanks for sharing
and hey, never be afraid to drink too much wine...LOL
Gerry...one of the caves is called the lemon squeeze...it is very tight, but really fun to explore.
Steve, you DO live in such a special place! Thank you for bringing it to us, because I think that many Americans really don't know much about NH... wait, that might not be a bad thing! :-) ~ Susan
Shaded and cool sounds SOOOOOOOO good to me right now. It's sweltering here. Oh, I think I hear thunder, maybe it will rain and cool it off.
Neat story about the discovery of the caves and lost river. I went to a couple of underground lakes before and thought they were really cool.
Tammy...I have made this little hike in the Lost river caves, a few times and they are really cool.
Steve I don't know. I am not a fan of heights and that bridge does not look to sturdy (:
What a cool looking place. How frightful to find a cave that way. There is one near me which drops about 100 feet straight down into a huge cavern. The guy who first found it, did the same thing - amazingly not dying on the way down, as he bounced off a few ledges. You live ina cool place.
Steve - Your area is on Jane and My "Bucket List". Through this venue of AR, we have enjoyed your posts of your area and will make plans to visit. Thanks for the hook
Claude...come while your young enough to get out of the car and walk into the woods, no offense intended the deeper in the nicer the forest gets.
